Asian Bodywork Therapist (ABT)
After 8 years of treating, the question that I get asked frequently is “How did you get in to this line of work?” The longish short answer is, when I was a child, I wanted to be a doctor. Unfortunately I discovered that I do not handle blood well and it is very difficult to be a surgeon when you are in danger of passing out or vomiting on top of your patient. Instead of Western medicine I developed a fascination with all things science, especially physics. In studying Chaos Theory I came across the idea that everything is energy and it is all connected in some fashion. Flash forward a ways to when I was working as an Engineer at Micron and during a slow night shift conversation involving some of the esoteric aspects of physics, one of my coworkers asked me if I had ever looked in to Buddhism or Taoism. As I hadn’t really, and being the complete nerd that I am, I set out to learn more and determine why my coworker had brought those religions up. What I discovered was a system of thought that is thousands of years old that held the understanding that everything is energy and it is all connected as well as an entire system of medicine based off that understanding. This discovery also corresponded with the chance meeting of someone who was studying Amma and I was an occasional practice subject for her during her studies. It took me about 5 years to finally be able to transition away from being an engineer and to create the space in my life to be able to study Amma.
My journey in the healing arts has been incredibly varied and I often say to my clients that I am my own best example in regards to experiencing illness or injury, etc. Because of my experiences, I enjoy helping people recover from injuries of any kind, post surgical recover, general stress related pain, and any other physical discomfort that may be going on. I also have a tremendous amount of experience with psycho-spiritual disharmonies such as depression, bi-polar, PTSD, and OCD and though I am not a counselor, routinely have clients thank me for my ability to put those issues into perspective and help them deal.
To keep myself in treating shape I have studied in the Shao-lin marital arts system and currently take belly dance classes at the Starbelly School of Dance . I love studying how the body moves and all the amazing things it can do and helping my clients to do the amazing things that want to do.
